St Francis of Assisi

 Sanctuary & High Altar

Navigation

In front of the Sanctuary are two ambos with marble panels set in them. They are used in the traditional manner with the Old and New Testament readings read from the southerly one and the Gospel proclaimed from the northerly one.
The front of the Sanctuary is screened in a sympathetic manner which has the effect of framing the High Altar rather than screening it. Under the Rood figures is the inscription “Agnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi miserere nobis” – “Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world have mercy on us”. On top of the screen sit two gilded Angels, which appear to have earlier sat on top of riddel posts in the Lady Chapel. Behind the Screen is a spacious sanctuary, made thus by Choir Stalls having been removed.
The Altar is wooden and contains a traditional Altar stone. The triptych on the reredos has paintings of (from left to right) St. Mary Magdalene, St. Stephen, The Blessed Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, St. Francis and St. Agnes. It is inscribed with the words “Verbum caro factum est” – “The word was made flesh”. This is an appropriate inscription to have above the Altar where bread and wine become the body and blood of Christ in the Mass.
There are two small but interesting features set in the southern wall of the Sanctuary. First there is a small stained glass window (the only stained glass in the building) between the Sacristy and the Sanctuary. It includes the date 1535 and is said to have come from an old (un-named) Abbey. Above this window is a tile dating from 1926. It is a copy of a tile in the Portiuncula (where the tile was blessed), made for the 700th anniversary of the death of St. Francis.
In the corner of the Sanctuary hangs the “Parish Banner”. This particular banner was made by Nora Field and Eve Davis in 2000. The previous Parish banner is now very fragile and is displayed in the Committee Room at the back of the hall.
